Internationalization of the Canary Islands educational system

The internationalization should be considered as a value within the Canary Islands educational system. The aim is to raise awareness about the importance of introducing the concept of «internationalization» from an early age, including it in the curriculum drawing up, in the teachers training and in the hallmarks of educational centers.

First of all, we must start with actions aimed to identify the internationalization as an element within the teaching-learning process of the students. This requires the training of teachers in the education`s global dimension and moreover we will promote activities aimed to raise the awareness and the participation educational centers that will involve the educational community into projects and initiatives where the internationalization will be established as an educational and social value.

International educational cooperation

This axis will promote the implementation of actions that allow the Canary Islands to develop activities within the framework of the international educational cooperation. On the one hand, the presence of the Canary Islands educational system in the international field will strengthen the tricontinental strategic reference of the islands in the educational sphere, being able to serve as a referent abroad for certain educational policies. On the other hand, the interrelation and the collaboration with other countries will entail an enrichment for the quality of our system, from which teachers, students and the entire educational community can benefit briefly.

The ECIE will promote the international cooperation in different fields of action, such as the signing of bilateral agreements with regions, organizations and institutions of other countries to articulate permanent mobility mechanisms, international twinning between educational centers, implementation of educational projects from the perspective of the international cooperation, initiatives of international cooperation for innovation or teacher cooperation actions.

International mobility

The international mobility, mainly of students and teachers, is the engine for the internationalization of the education. The participation in international mobility programs, the professional stays and studies in other countries represent an unrepeatable experience for the training and the better qualification of teaching professionals.

The ECIE will try to promote and follow up the international mobility of the Canary Islands’ teachers and students, mainly by facilitating the knowledge and the mobility programs management with European funding such as Erasmus+ and by making available for the educational centers the organizational resources that the international mobility development needs in order to become a reality which will be available for everyone.

Linguistic policy

The European Union has been promoting for years the foreign languages learning ​​and the linguistic diversity in Europe to improve the mutual understanding and to facilitate the access to knowledge of other countries and cultures. However, we are still far from the common objective, defined by the member countries during the 2002 Barcelona Summit, that each citizen learns two languages ​​in the educational system in addition to their mother tongue.

The ECIE will encourage the impulse of languages learning as an engine for the development of the Canary Islands society, which will also entail the enrichment of our educational system. Giving an internationalization dimension to languages teaching supposes that it ceases to be an objective in itself and it aims to become a powerful communication tool that will allow the interrelation with people of other societies and cultures and, therefore, the increase of opportunities for our young people in the social, academic and professional field.
